CISD trading explained: body-close confirmation in the Fractal Model

Learn what a change in the state of delivery means, how a body close confirms it, and where CISD fits inside a higher-timeframe trading narrative.

Change in the State of Delivery, or CISD, is a mechanical way to describe a shift in how price is moving. It does not predict a reversal by itself. It confirms that price has closed through a defined level after delivering in the opposite direction.

That distinction matters. A wick can probe a level and disappear before the candle closes. CISD requires a body close, so it asks for more evidence than an intrabar touch.

This guide explains CISD in the Fractal Model Pro framework, how it pairs with higher-timeframe structure, and why a confirmed shift is still only one part of a complete setup.

CISD is the first paired lower-timeframe body close through the defined run open. A wick through the level remains pending, and CISD does not replace model-timeframe structure or location.

What does CISD mean in trading?

CISD stands for Change in the State of Delivery. The reference level is the open of the last same-direction run before price attempts to deliver the other way.

In a bullish sequence:

  1. Price has been delivering lower.
  2. The open of the final bearish run becomes the bullish CISD reference.
  3. A lower-timeframe candle must close its body above that level.

In a bearish sequence:

  1. Price has been delivering higher.
  2. The open of the final bullish run becomes the bearish CISD reference.
  3. A lower-timeframe candle must close its body below that level.

The level identifies where the prior delivery began. The close through it is the event. Neither the color of the higher-timeframe candle nor a wick through the line is a substitute for that close.

CISD is confirmation, not context

A beginner can find a CISD on almost any chart if enough candles are inspected. That does not make every occurrence meaningful.

The Fractal Model uses an operating hierarchy:

  1. Directional context: establish the larger narrative rather than reacting to one candle.
  2. Model-timeframe structure and point of interest: identify a valid sweep or continuation at a qualified location.
  3. Paired lower-timeframe CISD: confirm that delivery has shifted inside that model window.

For a Candle 2 reversal, the higher-timeframe candle must sweep a prior high or low and close back through the swept level at a qualified point of interest. A confirmed swing, an active directional fair value gap, or—when neither is present—the immediately swept opposing reference candle can provide that location.

Without the location and model structure, CISD is simply a lower-timeframe event. It is not a complete Fractal Model setup.

Why the body close matters

Suppose price trades above a bearish CISD level during a forming candle, then closes back below it. The wick records an attempt, but the body did not confirm delivery above the reference. Treating that wick as confirmation changes the rule after the fact.

A body-close requirement helps separate three different states:

  • Pending: price is approaching or trading through the level, but the paired candle is still forming.
  • Confirmed: the paired candle has closed through the level in the required direction.
  • Invalid or absent: the candle closes without satisfying the rule, or the model window ends without a qualifying event.

This is also why a midpoint touch of an old projection or zone is not fresh entry confirmation. A zone touch can update visual housekeeping, but it does not create the lower-timeframe body close required for a new CISD.

Use the correct timeframe pair

The model is fractal, but its confirmation relationships are deliberate. Common complete pairs include:

For example, a trader studying a 4-hour Candle 2 does not use the final location of the 4-hour close to decide whether a 15-minute CISD occurred. The event belongs to the closed 15-minute candle that first closes through its reference during the active 4-hour model window.

That event can happen before the 4-hour candle closes. Fractal Model Pro can display a live structural state once the paired lower-timeframe close confirms it, while the higher-timeframe close later finalizes the model record. “Live” therefore describes timing; it does not relax the body-close rule.

A practical CISD workflow

Use this sequence to study CISD without allowing the lower timeframe to invent the larger narrative.

1. Start with the model timeframe

Identify the active model candle, the structural sweep, and the qualified point of interest. If the model-timeframe condition is missing, stop there.

2. Define direction before dropping lower

For a bullish reversal, the higher-timeframe sequence should support a low sweep and reclaim. For a bearish reversal, it should support a high sweep and reclaim. Candle color alone does not establish that direction.

3. Move to the paired confirmation timeframe

Use the defined pair rather than selecting whichever lower chart produces the cleanest-looking signal.

4. Mark the CISD reference

Identify the open of the final run delivering into the prospective reversal. Do not move the reference every time a new candle forms.

5. Wait for a closed body

Record the first paired-timeframe body close through the level. A wick, a touch, or an unfinished candle remains pending.

6. Keep ownership with the original setup

Once a confirmed reversal owns the active projections and liquidity map, same-direction continuation advances the Candle 3 and Candle 4 sequence. It should not be rebased into a new rolling Candle 2 on every candle.

Common CISD mistakes

Calling every close a reversal

CISD confirms a delivery shift. A valid Fractal Model reversal also needs model-timeframe sweep-and-reclaim geometry at a qualified point of interest.

Using a wick instead of a body close

Intrabar movement can look decisive and still close on the wrong side. The close is the confirmation event.

Letting the higher-timeframe close rewrite the event

CISD belongs to the paired lower timeframe. Whether the final higher-timeframe candle closes above or below the level is a different observation.

Moving the reference until a signal appears

Repeatedly selecting a more convenient run creates hindsight. Define the reference from the delivery sequence and keep it stable.

Treating a zone touch as entry confirmation

Price reaching a fair value gap, equilibrium, or projected area supplies location. The paired body close supplies CISD. Those jobs are related but not interchangeable.

Reading a green or red ray as a trade recommendation

Direction colors describe the confirmed event. They do not include position sizing, invalidation, liquidity conditions, or a trader’s individual risk constraints.

CISD study checklist

  • Is the higher-timeframe model and direction defined first?
  • Did the model candle interact with a qualified point of interest?
  • Am I using the correct confirmation/model pair?
  • Is the CISD reference the open of the final opposing delivery run?
  • Did a paired-timeframe candle body close through the level?
  • Am I recording the first confirmation instead of moving the line?
  • Is this confirmation attached to the original setup owner?
  • Have I kept location, confirmation, and risk decisions separate?

CISD FAQ

Is CISD the same as a break of structure?

No. CISD is defined by a body close through the open of the final delivery run. Other structure concepts may use different swing points or thresholds. They can occur near one another, but the definitions should not be blended.

Does candle color confirm CISD?

No. The body’s closing location relative to the reference is what matters. The higher-timeframe Candle 2 closure is also color-agnostic.

Can CISD confirm before the higher-timeframe candle closes?

Yes, when a completed candle on the paired lower timeframe closes through the CISD level during the active model window. The higher-timeframe record is finalized later.

Does every valid Candle 2 need CISD?

In a strict paired-confirmation workflow, the sweep-and-reclaim geometry is not admitted as an actionable Candle 2 or Candle 3 until the paired CISD event occurs. A trader can study raw geometry separately, but should label it accurately.

Does a confirmed CISD guarantee continuation?

No. It confirms a historical close through a level; it does not guarantee the next candle, eliminate slippage, or define risk. Context and invalidation still matter.
